What Happens When NaBloPoMo Assigns Ten Minutes of Free-Writes: Or Why Newbie Knock Knock Jokes Just Aren’t That Funny

Oh, hai. Happy Thor’s day, NaBloPoMo peeps!

Little c™ and I have been staying warm today by having Formula 1 races and wrestling.

This is our between races position.

This is our between races position.

When we got up this morning, it was 29 degrees out. Mom’s phone said it had a real feel of 17 degrees, so we decided to stay in.

Mom almost got to finish this book, but a project came in, so she let c™ keep it safe while she worked.

While mom was working c™ and I made these:

This is how I let mom know it's time to invite Tuna over for lunch soon.

Tuna. Tuna. This is how I let mom know it’s time to invite Tuna over for lunch soon.

Smiley Bowl. Little c™'s reaction to my Tuna piece.

Smiley Bowl. c™ thinks Tuna Tuna is a good idea.

I asked mom about today’s writing prompt. It reads, “Our ten-minute free-write is back for another round! Tap away on whatever comes to mind, no filters attached. (Feel free to edit later, or just publish as-is).”

Mom says these kinds of writing prompts aren’t really prompts. They’re timed writings. So we’re going to let little c™ practice his knock knock jokes for ten minutes, in hopes of deterring future free-writes.

You ready, little c™?

c™: Knock knock.

JD: Who’s there?

c™: It’s me silly.

JD: It’s me silly, who?

c™: No, it’s me, silly.

JD: That wasn’t a knock knock joke.

c™: You said this was practice.

JD: OK, let’s try again, but this time tell us a real joke, OK?

c™: Knock knock.

JD: Who’s there?

c™: Carrot.

JD: Carrot who?

c™: Carrot cake is my favorite.

JD: That wasn’t funny.

c™: Maybe I don’t understand this game.

JD: Jokes are supposed to be funny. That’s why they’re jokes.

c™: Why don’t you try one?

JD: OK. Are you ready?

c™: Who’s there?

JD: No, no. I have to say knock knock first. Haven’t you played knock knock before?

c™: Of course. We played it yesterday, remember?

JD: OK, let’s try again. I say knock knock. Then you say who’s there. Then we keep going.

c™: OK.

JD: Knock knock.

c™: Who’s there?

JD: Juan.

c™: Juan who?

JD: Juan day you’ll get the hang of this.

c™: That was a good one.

JD: Glad you liked it.

c™: Are our ten minutes up?

JD: Yep.

c™: Can we sign off?

JD: Please.
